Announcing National R&B Music Day
Formed in the U.S. in May of 2020, National R&B Music Day is the one and only official day of recognition and celebration for R&B music as declared by the U.S. Government’s National Day Archives.
When is National R&B Music Day Observed?
National R&B Music Day is observed on the first Saturday of March each year. It is the continuation of Black History Month, and preparation for Black Music Month, which is held each year in June.
Why is R&B Music Day Being Observed?
First, to raise awareness and educate the national community about the origin and future direction of this age-old art form. By uniting people of all ages, ethnicities and music preferences, as well collaborating with musicians, the media, community leaders, and law-makers, National R&B Day will galvanize the general public into thinking, “Why did it take so long for this genre of music and its culture to be appreciated and celebrated by everyone.
Second, because R&B music is one of the few genres of music that has not been officially recognized on any specific day of the year. There is a jazz day, blues day, hip-hop, reggae, etc., but there wasn’t a R&B Music Day…until now! Moreover, with the loss of so many of our great R&B and Soul music pioneers, it is crucial that we replicate, educate, and celebrate the music and the Artists who paved a path for so many others to follow.
Third, because R&B music is part of our Black heritage and everyday experience. We must continue to promote peace, create socially conscious music and utilize the talents of our gifted Artists in order to keep this genre of music alive for generations to come.
How Will R&B Music Day Be Celebrated Each Year?
National R&B Music Day will be celebrated with scheduled musical and educational events and programs across the country, for people of all ages, races, and music preferences. These activities (virtual and live) will be designed to encourage ongoing dialogue, to dispel stereotypes and discrimination that can sometimes be associated with “Black music” and to enjoy that which is known as R&B MUSIC.
Note: Free Activity Packets, with fun ideas and instructions on how to organize a R&B Music Day event (big or small) in your hometown on National R&B Music Day, will be sent to any individual or organization on request.
